About
Maharaja

A life of unwavering devotion, scholarly excellence, and compassionate humanitarian service spanning nearly five decades.

Born in the Holy Land

His Holiness Bhakti Purusottama Swami Maharaja was born as Mahesh Chandra Pattanayak on the auspicious day of Mohini Ekadashi in 1957, in the sacred city of Jagannatha Puri, Odisha, India — one of the holiest pilgrimage destinations in the Vaishnava tradition and the abode of Lord Jagannatha.

Growing up in the shadow of the magnificent Jagannatha Temple, young Mahesh Chandra was immersed in an atmosphere of deep spiritual devotion from his earliest years. The sacred traditions, the rhythmic kirtans that echoed through the ancient streets, and the grand Ratha-yatra festivals that drew millions — all of these profound experiences planted the seeds of an extraordinary spiritual destiny that would eventually blossom into a life of global service.

The city of Puri, known as Sri Khetra (the sacred field of the Supreme Lord), provided the perfect cradle for a soul destined to become one of the most prominent spiritual leaders of the modern Vaishnava world. The young Mahesh Chandra absorbed the rich tapestry of Odia devotional culture, which would later inform his scholarly understanding of sacred geography, temple traditions, and the deeper esoteric meanings behind India's most celebrated religious festivals.
